Pride gives us all the opportunity to reflect on the significant progress we have made in the western world in recent decades, while also remembering those countries where freedom to love whoever you choose and to live your life, is still not an option for so many. It’s also a good time to celebrate our achievements.
Pride is important because it’s about equality and reminds us of the need to continue to campaign and stand up for what’s right. The values of the Trust should shine through in everything we do: Togetherness, Responsibility, Equality and Caring.
It reminds staff that the Trust is a safe and welcoming environment for everyone; it reminds individuals to bring their whole and authentic selves to work and it reminds allies why their ongoing support is so important.
The theme of Pride this year is #50yearsofpride, so let’s not forget the brave contributions LGBT activists have made during that time in the fight for equality.
Gay icons stand up for their principles, are bold and brave, and challenge the status quo.
Harvey Milk, was the first openly gay politician and a visionary who campaigned for ending discrimination based on sexual orientation. I was actually living in San Francisco at the time of the verdict of his murder and was caught up in the ensuing anger of the community that night. So, for me, it’s very personal as well as political.
Elizabeth Taylor, who supported those individuals and gay freedoms, set up a significant foundation with personal commitment and energy. In a film of my life, I would like Elizabeth Taylor to play me!
