On World Mental Health Day and Baby Loss Awareness Week, the West London Perinatal Mental Health Service is hosting a public film screening and community engagement event around maternal mental health, in collaboration with the Hounslow Health Outreach Team.
Mother Tongue, Motherhood & Mental Health
Date: Thursday 10 October 2024 from 11am and 1pm
Location: Hounslow Holy Trinity Church, 6 High Street, Hounslow, TW3 1HG
The Mother Tongue film is the result of a collaboration between our service users and a professional filmmaker. The service users in the film speak powerfully in their first languages about their mental health journeys, and members of our diverse staff group speak about providing mental health care for new mothers, all in their first languages. Through the film we hope to raise awareness of the importance of supporting mothers’ mental health and in particular to empower minority communities to reach out for help
After the screening there will be stimulating panel conversation and a Q&A session open to the public, followed by light refreshments.
More than a quarter of new and expectant parents in the UK experience what’s called perinatal mental health problems, which can occur during pregnancy or in the first two years after a baby’s birth. Pregnant women / birthing people can develop mental ill health for the first time during pregnancy or after giving birth, and pre-existing mental health conditions can sometimes worsen at any time during the perinatal period.
