To mark Earth day (22 April) the Trust sustainability team organised a litter pick along the Grand Union canal in Southall. This year’s Earth day theme; ‘our power, our planet’, demonstrates it is in our power to look after our local environment and communities.

This theme aligns with the Trust’s commitment to becoming a greener NHS organisation and achieving the sustainability goals outlined in our Green Plan, to improve both our patient and local environments.

The litter picking event was generously supported by Ealing Council’s climate action and sustainability team who provided the litter picking toolkits for all participants. There was a good turnout of attendees; including Green champions and West London NHS Trust and Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust staff, including Trust Chief Financial Officer and Senior Responsible Officer for Sustainability, Paul Stefanoski.

Paul said: “I’m delighted to be part of the Earth day litter pick and it’s great to see so many people out here today doing their bit for the local area. By making small changes to protect our environment, we not only support our sustainability goals, but help the local communities we serve to achieve better health outcomes.”

Mark Thomlinson, Head of Sustainability & Climate for Ealing Council also came out to show his support.

Mark said: “Today’s Earth day litter picking event is about making the borough a better place to live in, work and enjoy. What we’re demonstrating today is how working in partnership can deliver that, and it's fantastic to see this collaboration between the council and West London NHS Trust. People giving a bit of their time to volunteer helps them to get outside, meet people and enjoy nature, which is not only good for their mental health but also helps to improve the environment. By creating new links and connections between our organisations we can work together to improve the health and wellbeing of our local residents.”
