The results for the Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) 2024 have been published. Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) are an annual assessment of the non-clinical aspects of NHS and private healthcare settings.

Each year as part of its ongoing commitment to enhance healthcare settings for our patients, staff, and visitors, the Trust takes part in PLACE. As an organisation, we firmly believe that a well-maintained environment makes all the difference and as part of our continued dedication to improve patient environments, the Trust allocates funding annually to support the PLACE programme.

These assessments are distinctive, as ‘patient assessors’ form 50% of the teams. Our ‘patient assessors’ include volunteers, those currently using our services and previous service users and carers. The PLACE 2024 inspections included teams visiting all 7 inpatient sites.

  1. St Bernard’s Hospital
  2. Broadmoor Hospital
  3. The Limes
  4. Clayponds Hospital
  5. Hammersmith and Fulham Mental Health Unit
  6. Lakeside Mental Health Unit
  7. Cassel Hospital

During the assessment scorecards are completed based on what the teams observed on the day and the information has since been collated by NHS Digital. Once the data is analysed, an overall percentage is given to each organisation on key criteria such as cleanliness, food and hydration, conditions, appearance and how an organisation’s environment meets the needs of patients in care with dementia or a disability. All our PLACE audits are fully supported by both patient and staff assessors.

The PLACE 2024 results for West London NHS Trust have been validated and were officially released on 20 February 2025. The results are available to view on the NHS Digital website.
