To mark World Mental Health Day (Thursday, 10 October), the perinatal mental health service at West London NHS Trust held a screening of its short film Mother Tongue, Motherhood and Mental Health.
The film highlights powerful stories from service users at the Trust, sharing their mental health journeys in their first languages.
The event, held at Holy Trinity Church in Hounslow, was opened by perinatal mental health consultant, Dr Jamila Carey, who provided background about the film before welcoming and handing over to the Mayor of Hounslow, Cllr Karen Smith.
Cllr Smith said: "It’s vital to recognise that pregnant individuals can experience mental health challenges for the first time during pregnancy or after giving birth. Even those with pre-existing conditions may find their struggles intensifying during this vulnerable period. This underscores the importance of creating a supportive environment where people feel safe to talk about their feelings and seek help.
"We all have a part to play in breaking down these barriers. In our homes and communities, let’s foster open conversations about mental health. It’s okay to ask for help. Let’s encourage each other to reach out and support one another, reminding those around us that they are not alone."
Cllr Smith encouraged women before, during, and after pregnancy, as well as those who have experienced baby loss, to contact the Trust's specialist services if they’re struggling to cope.
She also promoted the SHOUT service, encouraging new parents who are struggling in West London to text the word "HUG" to SHOUT at 85258 to receive immediate support.
She added: "In closing, let’s remember the importance of connection, understanding, and support. Together, we can break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a community where everyone feels empowered to seek help. Thank you for being here today, for watching this important film, and for being part of this vital conversation."
The film screening was followed by a panel discussion, including staff from the Trust's perinatal service.
Thanks to everyone who attended the event.
