A trainee forensic social worker from the Trust has been shortlisted for Student Social Worker of the Year.
Karla Coppendale (pictured right) is one of six student social workers to be nominated in the category of this year’s Social Work Awards.
This marks a huge milestone for Karla who is part of the Think Ahead graduate scheme and has been on placements at Three Bridges and St Bernard’s Hospital working with male forensic patients.
Karla said: "I’m very pleasantly surprised to be shortlisted for doing a job I have found so much joy and purpose in.”
Karla graduated in 2014 and completed a Master’s in Forensic Psychology in 2018. Her roles have included working with young homeless people, children with learning disabilities and as an advocate and mental health support co-ordinator for GPs, even achieving a coronavirus community champion award along the way.
Michelle Leonard who nominated Karla for this award said: “Karla’s dedication and unwavering commitment to her role in the Trust has created a positive change in the lives of those she serves.
"Her passion for social work and her ability to connect with individuals on a deep level is inspiring to those around her. Karla’s resilience and genuine care shine through in every interaction she has. She embodies the values and spirit which the Student Social Worker of the Year Awards aim to recognise and celebrate, which is why I nominated her for this award which she is deserving.
"I wish Karla the best of luck in the competition.”
The Think Ahead programme is a unique, fast-track training scheme designed to help staff develop skills to make a positive impact in mental health social work.
The course is delivered in partnership between Middlesex University and the host organisation working towards a postgraduate diploma alongside being in placement Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
In her second year, Karla will work as a full-time assessed and supported year-in-employment (ASYE) social worker whilst completing her Master’s in social work.
