Liaison and diversion workers provide an assessment service for people who come into contact with criminal justice services (usually courts and police stations).

This means that very unwell people will be diverted to hospital and other vulnerable people will be signposted to the most appropriate services in the community. This also means that the police and magistrates have better information to help them make decisions.

We aim to improve the health and justice outcomes for people who come into contact with the criminal justice system, where their needs are identified as factors in their offending behaviour.

As well as mental health and risk assessment, we are a key partner in multi-agency liaison and working.

Referral information

Referrals at the police station are made by police officers, detention staff and custody health care nurses.

Referrals at court may be made by court staff, defence representatives or custody staff, but all defendants are screened each morning during the week.
